Install
Google Tag Manager
If your site already runs GA4 through Google Tag Manager, you can add Punchline the same way, without editing your site's code: one tag installs the snippet, and event tags send your GA4 events to Punchline by the same names.
Status: version 1.2 of the template, not yet in Google's Community Template Gallery. Import it from the file below. Its code is tested against Google's documented template APIs and the snippet, but it hasn't yet been through a live GTM container; if GTM shows an error on import or in Preview, tell us.
Import the template
- Download
punchline-gtm-template.tpl. - In Tag Manager: Templates → Tag Templates → New, then the menu (⋮) → Import, and choose the file. Save.
Install tag
- Tags → New, tag type Punchline Analytics, Tag type Install.
- Paste your Site ID (Punchline: Site settings → Install).
- Trigger: All Pages (or Initialization – All Pages). Save and publish.
This loads the same browser snippet: no cookies or storage. If you also have an edge install, each page load is still counted once.
Event tags: your GA4 conversions, in Punchline
For each GA4 event you count as a conversion (a GA4 key event):
- Tags → New, Punchline Analytics, Tag type Event.
- Event name: the same name as the GA4 event tag, such as
purchaseorgenerate_lead. - Value and Currency: the same variables as the GA4 tag's
valueandcurrencyparameters, if it has them. - Trigger: the same trigger as the GA4 event tag.
Then make each one a goal: Switch from GA4 in the dashboard lists your GA4 key events and creates the matching goals in one click.
What's sent
Only the event name, the value and the currency. Other GA4 parameters (items, user properties, anything in the data layer) are never read, since they can carry personal data. Event tags fired before the Install tag are queued and sent once the snippet loads.
